In this article I will teach you the 10 habits for happiness. Practicing these 10 habits will improve the quality of your life and your mental and physical health in unimaginable ways.
Being human means you will experience a range of emotion such as sadness, frustration, anger or anxiety. It is unrealistic to believe that you can be happy all the time.
However, anyone could learn how to be happier. All aspects of our psychology and personality are open to change. If you keep an open mind and learn how to implement new habits in your life, you will soon notice how your life is changing for the better. Learn how to change your thoughts here.
1. Don’t take life too serious
“Happiness is a journey, not a destination; happiness is to be found along the way not at the end of the road, for then the journey is over and it’s too late. The time for happiness is today not tomorrow.” – Paul H Dunn
When you experience more positive emotions, you become more open-minded, resilient, creative and you develop better problem-solving skills.
You should be happy and enjoy every step of your life. People often think they will be happier when something will change in their life. (becoming successful, finding love, buying the house of their dreams).
Instead, being happy on your journey to the destination will provide you with inspiration, motivation and energy. Bring more fun in your life, in your work and in your relationships
Make a list with all the things that bring pleasure and fun to your life. Try to plan at least one thing that you enjoy doing in your daily routine.
2. Focus on the positive
“We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorns have roses.”- Alphonse Karr
Focus on what is going right in your life, not on what is going wrong. Focus on the positive can help you hold onto hope, be optimistic, resilient and motivated to deal with life challenges.
Write down the things you are grateful for and the things that went well that day. This habit will help you constantly look for what went right every day, which has an enormous positive effect on your mental health. Learn how to let go of negative emotions here.
3. Face your fears
‘’If you keep doing what you‘ve always done, you’ll keep getting what you’ve always got.’’- Jim Rohn.
In order to experience the happiness you always wanted you need to overcome your fears and anxieties. You will never know what you are really capable of if you never step out of your comfort zone.
Negative emotions should not be avoided. Acknowledging and overcoming your fears can be empowering and liberating.
Moreover, assess any negative experience as a way to learn and grow, look for the things you can control and change and accept those you cannot. Learn how to master your emotions here.
4. Forgive yourself and others
”I think the first step is to understand that forgiveness does not exonerate the perpetrator. Forgiveness liberates the victim. It’s a gift you give yourself.”- T. D. Jakes
Holding onto anger and bitterness is extremely unhealthy for your mental health.
If you have been wronged you have every right to be angry, bitter or frustrated. However, forgiving does not mean accepting what was done to you.
Being angry and bitter will not punish the person that has done wrong by you, it will only punish yourself.
Forgiveness is something you should do for you, not for the other person. Letting go and moving on is essential for your happiness.
Moreover, forgive yourself for what you have done wrong in the past. Practice self-compassion and observe your feelings without judgment.
5. Write down your goals
“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”― Benjamin Franklin
Planning is the key to success. If you don’t plan for something, you cannot achieve it.
When you start planning it is important to start with your ideal life. Think about how your dream life would look.
In reality, no life is perfect. However, you should set your goals high, but also achievable. Too many people settle for too little or don’t even have an aim at all. You cannot hit a target that doesn’t even exist.
You have the choice of wandering along with no clear direction, hoping that one day you will find happiness and success or you can create a future plan with the goal to live a happy and fulfilled life.
People change and goals change. You can always modify these goals whilst you are working towards them.
Take your time to think and dream of your ideal life. After this, take a pen and paper and write tangible steps you can take to achieve your ideal life.
You could create a vision board or write down a plan that would not only help you get where you want but also remind you if you are on the wrong path.
Write down goals for each aspect of your life (your dream partner, relationship, children, house, job or health). Focus on what you want, not on what you don’t want.
6. Plan your goals with small steps
”The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark. ”- Michelangelo
It might seem overwhelming to organise a big life plan. Take one step at a time and set goals each day.
Set a time for each small goal and for your life goal. Giving yourself a time limit will increase your chance of accomplishing them.
Specific goals are far more likely to be achieved that general goals. The more specific you are about your goals, the more chances it will become true. Also, think of how you can achieve the goal, what actions are you going to take in order to reach them and keep track of your progress.
It is also important to set achievable goals. If you goals seem unachievable, you will lack motivation to keep on track with your plan.
Have a clear idea of what you want for yourself before you create your plan. Think of your values, desires and what will make you happy, not what others desire for you or find successful.

Meditation will help you relax, calm down and de-stress. Practicing meditation every day will have enormous benefits for your mental and physical health.
Becoming more mindful and aware of your thoughts will help you understand and challenge negative thoughts.

Exercise can take many forms and can be more fun than people realise. Move as much as possible and try to minimise the hours of inactivity in order to improve your mental health.
Physical and mental health should not be kept separate. Exercise is not only good for physical health, but also for mental health.
Exercise significantly impacts our feelings and it is the most effective antidepressant, stress manager and mood enhancer.
In order to enjoy exercise and make it fun you can listen to music or audio books or find a friend to join you in the activity.
9. Eat healthy
“The food you eat can be either the safest and most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison.” – Ann Wigmore
Your primarily source of food should be a mixture of fruits, vegetable and grains. Avoiding processed foods, sugar, caffeine and alcohol can have tremendous benefits to your mental health.

Sleep is one of the most important things to consider when it comes to happiness and well-being. Research has found a strong link between lack of sleep and mental and physical health problems.
Most people don’t value sleep. Sleep needs to be prioritised as its benefits for your mind and body cannot be ignored. Set a sleep routine and try to stick with it.
This article describes the 10 habits that will change your life and bring happiness into your life. It is important to focus on one habit at a time. By trying to change everything in your life at the same time, you will become overwhelmed and you will be more likely to give up.
Start with one happiness habit and introduce it to your life for at least 21 days, then move to the next one.
